Starter Generator

Meggitt Artus offers specific solution to provide Starter and Generator function for aircraft engines.

Starter Generator solutions are based on:

  • Brushless DC motor (wounded rotor) for Driving function
  • Synchronous Rectification for Generating function

Driving function (Motor mode)

In motor mode, the Starter Generator Units are providing controlled torque vs speed characteristic regardless of supply voltage (from 14V to 30V) to drive aircraft engine from 0 rpm to self sustaining speed.

Generating function (Generator mode)

In Generator mode, the Starter Generator Units are regulated converters providing regulated 28 VDC for on-board DC networks from 6000 rpm to 13000rpm, with nominal ratings between 200 and 400 A

Regulated converters are used to create high quality DC networks. They are able to keep network voltage within +/- 1.5 % of rated voltage up to the rated current, and then limiting power on the output, up to the defined overload, and finally managing a short circuit current limitation.

These units present ratings between 200 A and 400 A for 28 VDC networks

These units may be cooled by aircraft forced air or by their own fan.

Features and benefits

  • Controlled torque vs speed characteristic in motor mode
  • Power stage mounted onto the Starter Generator housing
  • Electronic Control Unit fitted at the back of the Starter Generator
  • Monitoring and communication module, to manage part of the surrounding environment
  • Embedded fan, to prevent need of blown air circuit on aircraft
  • Embedded firmware and/or software

Applications

Used on commercial or military platforms in the following applications:

  • DC Starter for aircrafts engines
  • DC network generation for aircrafts

At Meggitt, we can provide you with a Controlled Starter Generator that is specifically designed and tuned for your application.
